Stetson (by Fairbanks) 5-string presentation ladies banjo, S/N 15043, Circa 1895
W.J. Dyer & Bros. of St. Paul, MN sold a number of banjos under the brand name J.F.Stetson . Most were typical trade banjos but about 5 have come to light that were presentation grade banjos made by Fairbanks. This is the only one to my knowledge that has ladies' banjo dimensions - 10" head and 23.5" scale and this example even has a Fairbanks serial number. This banjo features incredible engraved pearl inlay work all over the peghead and fingerboard, a nicely carved heel, and a rim spun over on both the outside and the inside. The tuners and tailpiece are carved ivory.
