S.S. Stewart 5-string "Solo Banjeaurine", S/N 18837, Circa 1896
Stewart's "Solo Banjeaurine" had a smaller head
than his original "Imperial Banjeaurine", a change he introduced because the
larger heads proved difficult to keep in tune in humid weather. This
example is fancier than any of Stewart's regularly cataloged models, and has
ornamentation that would place it between the highest grade No. 4 models and his
elaborate "presentation" banjos. Note the extensive engraved pearl work on
both the peghead and the fingerboard, the elaborate wood marquetry inside the
rim, the engraved rim, and the beautiful carving on both the heel and the back
of the peghead.
