Dewick 5-string banjo Circa 1915
This is a beautifully made banjo, with a turned walnut archtop tone ring, birdseye maple rim with no dowel stick and beautiful marquetry work, unusual heel carving, countersunk bracket screws, and an overhanging rim cover that forms a kind of lossy acoustic resonant cavity. Although this banjo is unmarked, Mike Holmes of Mugwumps believes it to be made by William H. Dewick, a Brooklyn, NY teacher, performer and maker. He was primarily a small producer of stringed instruments, particularly banjos, for professional players (Thanks Mike!). I would be interested in any other information anyone has about this banjo.
