J. Magez fretless 5-string banjo, Circa 1870's
This is the second banjo I have found that was made by John Magez of Baltimore, and it is a stunning instrument. The inlaid wood designs on the fingerboard and peghead are simply exquisite, with color images of a couple dancing, a crossed guitar and banjo, and vine leaves as well. I purchased this banjo from a person in New York City who found it in a thrift store! Interestingly, both of my Magez banjos, which are quite different, are stamped with J. Magez, Balto. in a circle and the number 5 inside the circle.
