Clifford-Essex 5-string banjo, Circa 1909

This is an early Clifford-Essex 5-string banjo, and the only one I have seen without the shield on the peghead.  At this point in time, CE banjos were Stewart clones, but the metal work, including the bizarre metal friction pegs, is superior to that found on most American banjos.
