Haynes “Bay State” 5-string banjo, model 323, Circa 1890
This banjo is identical to the model 323 banjo in Haynes’ 1890 catalog with the exception of it having a nicely carved heel. All of the higher grade banjos in the catalog could be ordered with a carved heel at extra cost if the purchaser desired. Interestingly, even the highest grade models such as my model 354 did not come with a carved heel unless it was specifically requested. Note the nice backstrap, carved ivory tailpiece, and tasteful inlays on this banjo.
