S.S. Stewart 5-string banjo-banjeaurine, S/N 18403, Circa 1896
Stewart manufactured many specialty banjos for the banjo orchestras that were formed around the globe in the 1890's. The banjo-banjeaurine was intended to be played between a regular banjo and the shorter neck banjeaurine that Stewart invented. Thus if the banjearuine was intended to be the violin of the banjo orchestra, the banjo-banjearuine was a kind of viola.
