S.S. Stewart “Orchestra” No. 2, 5-string banjo, S/N 11773, Circa 1893
Stewart's "Orchestra" line was one of his best. These banjos featured a 12" head, and the No. 2 model (which cost $40), unlike the "Universal Favorite" No. 2 banjo (which cost $30) in my collection, came with a beautifully carved heel, and multiple laminations under the fingerboard. This banjo also has the original MOP inlayed Maltese Cross friction pegs and the "Common Sense" tailpiece with a carved ivory rosette.
