S.S. Stewart "American Princess" custom 5-string banjo, S/N 8819, Circa 1891
This early Stewart was custom-made for someone with the initials M.L.B. as indicated by the engraved pearl letters on the peghead. At first glance it appears to be a fairly generic Stewart with "American Princess" dimensions (10" rim and 17" neck), but closer inspection reveals very extensive heel carving extending beyond the 6th fret and beautiful double-dolphin carving on the back of the peghead. This banjo was part of the Tsumura collection, but was acquired by him after the publication of his "1000 Banjos" book.
