S.S. Stewart’s Sons “4S” 5-string banjo, S/N 4806, model no. 332, Circa 1905
After S.S. Stewart died in 1898, his sons joined with Joseph Stern of New York and produced "Improved 4S" banjos until about 1910. They used Stewart hardware until they ran out of it, and this banjo has a standard Stewart rim and rim hardware. The lightly carved heel is reminiscent of the most simple carving on the earlier Stewart banjos.
