A.C. Fairbanks (by Vega) "Tubaphone" #3, 5-string banjo, S/N 26126, Circa 1910
Vega's "Tubaphone" banjos, first introduced in 1909, featured a new tone ring designed by David Day, and they remain among the favorites of players and collectors because of their bright sound, high volume, and wonderful workmanship. The #3 model featured an inlaid engraved flowerpot on the peghead and a nicely carved heel. The tailpiece on this banjo is not original. With the thick rim and bracket band, these banjos are heavy!
