S.S. Stewart "20th Century" 5-string banjo, S/N 63505, Circa 1900
In 1896, Stewart introduced a "20th Century" model banjo to commemorate the impending change of centuries. The model started at $30, but as in all Stewart banjos, more money bought more ornamentation. This example is in wonderful condition, and includes a pearl inlaid flowerpot on the peghead, a nicely carved heel, and gold-plated hooks and nuts, a feature usually seen only on Stewart's fanciest banjos. This banjo was probably produced shortly after Stewart's death in 1898.
