S.S. Stewart "Universal Favorite" flush-fret 5-string banjo, S/N2865, Circa 1886
This is a very early Stewart with flush ivory frets and a name and date stamp that reads (I think) "D.P. ECEWLE, Nov. 1886." Very few Stewarts have date stamps, and this banjo confirms existing dating information for these fine banjos. There is no model designation, but the dimensions are same as those on the "Universal Favorite" series. Note the early hardware, the ivory tailpiece, the Maltese Cross tuners, and the unusual wood marquetry inlay on the peghead.
